Movie review of The Help

It is a movie, inspired by a book written by Kathryn Stockett. The story takes place on the 60’s in Jackson, a town of Mississippi. The story is told by three women. Two of them are Black help, they work in a service with a family. The third is a young journalist who wish would write a book to show the help’s daily. We are from the point of view for one of the helpers, Aibilieen, who is the first-person narrator.

The two help, Abileen and Minny, decided to give their hearing to the young journalist, Skeeter, in order to denounce the fact that they are considered as lower than the White people.

Other helps are convinced and give also their hearing and a book is published. It becomes successful and is read by many people.

We can notice, through the point of view of Aibileen and Minny, the fact they are badly considered because they are Black. For example, Minny’s employer doesn’t want that Minny use the same toilets as White people and she puts her help’s toilets outside. She displays contemptuous to Black people.

I have really loved the movie because it manages to speak in a just way and sometimes with humour, about something who is difficult to show and that we haven’t realize before. Even if the slavery was abolished at that time, there are still discriminations to Black people. We feel near to the characters and we can easily see it from their perspective.
